Basic Filtering hoppers can pull/push only a single item type of item. Which you'll have to define by putting it on thefilter slot.

Put an item on the GUI on the bottom slot, and that will be the item that will get manipulated by the hopper.
The hopper will only interact with items that match the item on the "Pull Only:" slot.
